Nowadays the development and advances in veterinary medicine point to the specialization of the different branches that shape it, dividing medicine in equine, bovine, minor clinical and exotic animals. All these branches have a narrow relation with types of specializations of the veterinary, like radiology, immunology, surgery, etc.

All these areas without professional and technological support didn´t have the value or the impact that are generating nowadays, for example the use of ultrasound in rehabilitation on pets is an area that is don´t known and is not used in Chile.

Everything that relates technological advances is very good, but this can´t help without the social impact that this will lead, I mean, the main idea in veterinary is give welfare to the animals, and this is essential to promote in the proper way the care and maintenance of all the creatures that be related with men, it is a social changes that will benefit the animals.
For example, nowadays exist the bach flowers therapy and it is being used very much in dogs of company, which leaves in evidence that the persons have changed his perception of the animals, from simple pets to members of the family with virtues and strengths.

Regarding education, the task of all is do our best to make the world a better place, but in search of Eden, the common of people forget the animals and consider that they don´t have feelings or emotions. Is necessary generate conscience in people about animals, as well as laws to defend and establish the bases for improve the animal welfare.

In conclusion, veterinary medicine is a hard career and to work demands to know much of everything (and I mean that a veterinary is not only a person who put a vaccine to your dog ). In order to face all challenges that come ahead, pushing every veterinarian to be a integrated person, we can use technology and know about a lot of branches, but we need to develop social consciousness in all people and educate future generations to generate a mutualism with the people and animals to make this world a better place, a really hard challenge!!

Improvac is a vaccine created to prevent puberty in male pigs and thus reduce hormones that cause boar taint (a taste many consumers dislike), grow pigs bigger and is an alternative to physical castration, therefore is call "chemical castration" of pigs.
The last year was licensed for use in Britain, but this drug is used in Australia since one decade and is now approved in 53 countries.
Due of this, a controversy was generated because the pig meat could be on sale without a label to warn shoppers that it contains Improvac.
The Assured Food Standards (AFS) agency rejected Improvac, fearing a public backlash, because in 2008 a scandal was produced in Ireland when pork products were contaminated and the public sensitivity could be high. So the AFS wants more market intelligence before making a change.
Another agencies, like the UK's National Pig Association, wanted more research into consumer attitudes. The British Veterinary Association wants concerns about safety for farm workers and while for Soil Association (an organic movement) the primary concern was the impact on the animals.
On the other hand, Pfizer, the pharmaceutical giant that developed the drug is defended of all this saying the Improvac could not affect consumers through the pig meat or the environment and this is guaranteed by the European commission's licensing authorities, including a panel of international scientific experts, that assessed Improvac's environmental safety, consumer safety and the product's safety and efficacy when used in pigs. And finally they say that the safety assessment of Improvac was every bit as rigorous as a human medicine assessment.

I think the current situation of the Faculty is worthy ... because I have heard to senior students talking about that the classrooms before were very ugly and most of the furniture was badly damaged.
Now, at least the structures are noticeably improved, everything looks more harmonious, and I like the sky-blue color that are painting the entire Faculty, the red brick of before it was very depressing!
One of the things that I would describe as very bad, is the cafeteria ... the food they offer is unvaried, ill-prepared and very expensive! And the attention! Uff ...very bad too! Sometimes I´m afraid to buy something because the Mrs. who attends always is angry!!
All there for me this badly designed, space is very small, in the lunch is hard to find a table. And besides being a very expensive meal, the menu claims to be something, for example “rice with steak”... but they say: I dont have steak...Can I change it by burger? And I have accept :( But, they again they ask me and say: now I dont have burgers, Can I give you an egg? ¬¬
It seems really a joke, end up giving almost the leftovers! The worst thing is that most of the time I buy there, ends happening this! It's horrible!
I think the solution to this might be the granting of the cafeteria, such as in Agronomy or other faculties. It would be much more orderly and hygienic, and the workers will be trained to perform their job correctly.
In this manner we could have a better service and we could feed ourselves properly!

It's really a difficult choice, because there are many animals that I like, including our faithful friends the dogs, cats because they are so loving, dolphins for its great intelligence and also the horses.
Of all these my favorite is the horse...horses are in my heart!!. I think they're very noble and always ready to help humans. They are so big that I feel too small for they, but even so, I find incredible that they have the intelligence to obey and of giving us so much. Some can be used for sports, these are the most beautiful breeds, and certainly expensive, but they can do wonders!. The jumps and stunts they do, impress me and drives me to want to know more about them.
They are big and strong, yet sensitive. I would love to work helping them, I think this is a very interesting area and a major challenge, since it is very complex and it takes great expertise in them.
The best of all, is that I not only could help them, also I help many children with physical or mental problems, because they can be rehabilitated using as a therapeutic mediator to this animal. In this way the horses have provided a complementary therapy to traditional medicine, improving different motor sequelae, psychological and social aspects of diverse etiology.
This therapy can be of two types:
Hippotherapy that is a therapy for patients with mainly motor disabilities. And the therapeutic riding, in which the horse and riding are used as an facilitator instrument in the psychoeducational and sociability fields.
These animals are really amazing and they are a great supplement for people. They helped us with its strength from ancient times, give us their friendship and they also have multiple benefits for healing. I love them!

There are many places that should a foreigner tourist visit in Santiago. To begin, I think it´s important to visit historical places such as the Palacio de la Moneda and the old part of Santiago, like the Plaza de Armas. Also museums even though appear to be very boring.
So, the five places that I recommend are:

Santa Lucia Hill. Located in the heart of the city, an interesting place to visit, as it was here that the Spanish encountered the natives when they came to this valley. At the top of the hill you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city and admire the Andes, especially in winter, when snowfall.

The Chascona. A visit to the house where the renowned poet and writer Pablo Neruda, reveals the unique world where lived the remarkable Nobel Prize of Literature. Its name "The Chascona" was placed by an allusion to the hair of a Neruda's secret love. "Chascona" is used synonymously with the word "disheveled" in Chile. A very entertaining place.

Metropolitan Zoo. Located in the Metropolitan Park of Santiago. Ideal to watch and meet the endemic animals of Chile, since it has special section for these animals: black-necked swans, condors of the Andes, pudú and the Chilean flamingo are for example some of them. They are also the inevitable elephants, lions and monkeys that make it an educational and entertaining trip.

Barrio Bellavista. For tourists this is the right place to shop and have fun. There are lapislázuli jewelry, art galleries, museums, theaters and many restaurants. At night you can also visit many places to have fun dancing and listen live music.

Central Market. Located south of the Mapocho river,is a rather striking, which allows foreigners to know more about the culture of our country. There are restaurants specializing in seafood, famous for it rich flavor, and they say also, by other effects! ahaha!

It´s so difficult speak about this topic, because is very controversial. I could say that in a justified case, I would see it as an option. But I truly believe that if someone should be punished, what better to do it here in life?. In the long term would be harder and really a good punishment.

Therefore I´m against the death penalty. I feel that this punishment is very severe. And it scares me a bit, because there are places where religion establishes penalties, like death penalty, to persons who don´t committed a felony. As is the case of Muslim women, that if they show any part of the body in public (they only can exhibit ankles in public), are condemned to die. OMG! I would be dead there!!!

I think it's an abuse of power and that in countries who is still in effect this punishment human rights are brutally violated. This should be better regulated by international organizations to prevent atrocities against innocent people.

The execution of persons has been employed by almost all societies at one time or another in their history to punish their crimes. Yet it seems strange that developed countries like Japan and the United States still maintain in effect the death penalty, because today the vast majority of countries in the world have abolished it.

But then it appear another problem, as in the case of our country... Now people commit serious crimes and the sentences for them are very low or these people still are free.

Where is the balance?

I would you like to go to Egypt, because I think is a very interesting place....full of history, and could see the great and wonderful works constructed there, that has always interested me, and I would love to visit Egypt one day. I think it would be very mysterious.

I would like to visit the pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx, the great temples and archaeological sites. Go to The Cairo museum would be great, because is where the treasures of Tutankhamun are exhibits, I would like to see mummies and more of the culture of ancient Egypt.
Also visit the Sahara desert, riding camels and navigate the Nile River would be unforgettable things . I think Egypt is truly one of the first and most dazzling civilizations in the history of mankind.

If I had the opportunity to stay for a while there, it would be fun to spend time working on something related to tourism, to learn more about their culture, and enjoy much more time there than in a single visit. It could also practice a lot in English with tourists.
Although manners are very different from ours, as much of the population professes Islam, would be a great adventure for me!!

Hello everyone, I hope that you are fine!!


My last term was very stressful, because I had many things to do during the second term of 2009, and the time was not too.

But I was learned a lot of things very interesting for me,in physiology and pharmacology, for example, that are helpful for clinical examinations of patients. I had great field trips, where I could see directly what we were taught about animal production.

When testing began, I felt really tired ... I had to take multivitamin and started doing yoga again to relax!! and as I could, share with my family and friends, going to concerts and parties.
I studied a lot, but biochemistry was a big challenge, because it was the second time that I did it. Fortunately I passed all my classes, and I was very happy!!!

Veterinary medicine is a very nice career, I love it ! but I think that their curriculum is too overloaded. We end up knowing everything about many animal species, and in addition to being doctors, we do many other things, that for example in human medicine would be a work for other people.
I find that the career is wrong valued, and should last a few years more. After all we are as a doctor + a nurse (as compared to human medicine)... we are like a juggler who should knows it all !!

The Transantiago has been the target of many criticisms, but when compared with the pre-Transantiago system, this has improved in many aspects such as the treatment towards students, the payment system that allows greater safety within the buses and now the disabled people can access easier to public transport.

But also missed the "take me for a hundred" which we negotiated our way with the drivers, it was highly desirable economically. Now there are fewer options and multiple transfers over short distances, thus slows travel.

The beginning of Transantiago was chaotic, I remember that the buses were crowded, people were very angry and that generated conflicts.The lack of information and malfunctioning of the new transport plan was a great disappointment.

The transantiago has been a major headache for many Chileans, really a very bad service at first, but has been improving, even though still need to improve the routes and the frequency at which buses pass by, because yet there are times the wait is long.

I hope the Transantiago continue improving and that we can finally have an efficient public transport system, clean and friendly.

This is my first post in my new blog, specially created for my english classes of pilot level.
To start I'll tell you that my name is Daniela, and I'm in third year of Veterinary Medicine.
I hope to get better in English writing with my blog. I need achieve a more fluid writing (and speaking also), because sometimes I find it difficult...and it makes me mad ! :(
